In north-western Russia, Kenozero National Park lies in Arkhangelsk Oblast, near the border with Karelia. At its heart, Lake Kenozero forms part of a vast region of lakes, forests and isolated villages, on the watershed between the White Sea and Baltic Sea basins. Here, time seems to have stopped. The landscapes and villages still bear traces of the Soviet world, and sometimes even of an earlier one.
